Build the E₈ lattice from D₅ and A₃, then inspect the representations and charges of the marked carrier. Follow the construction through its exact mathematical steps and physical interpretation.
What is E₈ in this construction?
A lattice is a discrete set of vectors closed under integer addition. The positive E₈ lattice has eight dimensions, even squared lengths and determinant one. Its 240 shortest nonzero vectors have squared length two. The associated Lie algebra has dimension 248, counting those 240 roots and eight Cartan directions.
TFPT uses E₈ as a closure and consistency structure. The construction begins with a specified five slot carrier and four marked boundary points, from which its D₅ and A₃ parts are obtained. The eight lattice directions are internal mathematical data; their number does not count physical spacetime dimensions.
How D₅ and A₃ close to E₈
Each lattice has determinant four and discriminant group ℤ₄. The selected generators have discriminant norms 5/4 and 3/4. Their sum is two, so the diagonal order four glue is isotropic modulo even integers. Adjoining its cosets produces an even lattice of rank eight and determinant one.
q(D5)+q(A3)=45+43=2,[E8:D5⊕A3]=4
In words: The two discriminant norms combine to an even norm. The extension contains four cosets of the original direct sum; its determinant is 4 × 4 divided by 4 squared, which equals one.
Build the roots in four cosets.
Split eight Euclidean coordinates into five and three. In this coordinate model, A₃ is realized as the isometric D₃ root lattice. The extension joins four paired discriminant classes. Each contributes the following norm two vectors.
Class 0: The two nonzero entries stay in one block. The five coordinate block contributes 40 D₅ roots; the three coordinate block contributes 12 A₃ roots.
The A₃ roots occupy the other block, for example (0, 0, 0, 0, 0 | 1, −1, 0).
52 + 60 + 64 + 64 = 240 roots
Integer roots have two entries ±1 and six zeroes. Half integer roots have eight entries ±½ with an even number of minus signs. These explicit vectors, together with the lattice basis and its Gram matrix, provide the E₈ construction. The identity 5/4 + 3/4 = 2 is its compatibility check, not the whole construction.
The labels 1 and 3 depend on the choice of discriminant generator and can be interchanged. The four cosets are lattice classes, not four particle species.
On a complex five dimensional carrier C, the even exterior representation is ΛevenC=Λ0C⊕Λ2C⊕Λ4C. Its dimensions are 1+10+5=16. This is the D₅ half spinor in the stated Clifford construction. Its identification with one physical fermion family carries the marked carrier and field dictionary.
The 3+2 split separates three colour slots and two weak slots. Unitary transformations preserving the split and total determinant form S(U(3) × U(2)), isomorphic to (SU(3) × SU(2) × U(1))/ℤ₆.
The remaining block phase has one weight xc on each colour slot and one weight xw on each weak slot. The total determinant condition makes its generator traceless: 3xc+2xw=0. The primitive integer pair is (−2,3), up to a common sign. In the stated orientation and charge convention X=6Y, this gives Yc=−1/3 and Yw=+1/2. Charges add on exterior states.
Y=61diag(−2,−2,−2,3,3)
In words: Selecting one colour slot and one weak slot gives hypercharge −1/3 + 1/2 = 1/6, as required for the quark doublet representation in this charge convention.
Act on a carrier state
An exterior state records the occupied slots in their order. Insertion and removal change that state, including its sign. Try an occupied slot twice to see the zero vector, then reset and compare operations in different orders.
Try the operation that builds the spinor.
c₁c₂c₃w₁w₂
c₁ ∧ w₁
Start with c₁ and w₁ occupied: an even degree two basis state.
Each insertion or removal changes parity. A pair of these operations returns to the original parity. The even 16 dimensional space is preserved by the quadratic spin action, rather than by each individual gamma operator.
From five operator pairs to the D₅ spin action
Write a†ⱼ for insertion and aⱼ for removal. These operations satisfy the canonical anticommutation relations. Their ten gamma combinations give the Clifford action:
{aj,ak†}=δjk,{aj,ak}={aj†,ak†}=0
In words: Insertion and removal obey the exclusion and sign relations of the exterior algebra.
γ2j−1=aj†+aj,γ2j=i(aj†−aj),{γa,γb}=2δab
In words: Five insertion and removal pairs supply ten Clifford gamma operators.
Each gamma flips even and odd degree. The quadratic generators ¼[γₐ, γᵦ] preserve parity and realize the spin action of so(10). The full exterior algebra has dimension 32; its even half S⁺ has dimension 16. This gives the representation action behind the dimension count.
The operations act in the specified representation. Identifying them with physical fields or a particle preparation retains the original carrier and source assumptions.
Select the occupied colour and weak slots, or choose one of the six sectors. The original reader adds the slot hypercharges and computes the electric charge. Odd selections are identified as the other half spinor.
Three colour slots · Y = −1/3 each
Two weak slots · Y = +1/2 each
Y = 1 × (−1/3) + 1 × (1/2) = 1/6

Electric charge Qₑ = T₃ + Y = 1/2 + (1/6) = 2/3

What is assumed in this demonstration?
This reader starts with the five dimensional carrier, its 3+2 marking, the normalized hypercharge operator and the even exterior representation. It demonstrates the charge readout. The source and physical selection of that marking are separate questions.
Check the gauge anomalies of the stated Weyl spectrum
For the full sixteen component spectrum, the linear and cubic hypercharge traces vanish. The mixed coefficients include the sector multiplicities and the fundamental representation indices:
TrY=0,TrY3=0
In words: The gravitational hypercharge trace and the cubic hypercharge trace both vanish for this spectrum.
SU(3)2U(1):SU(2)2U(1):61−31+61=0,41−41=0.
In words: The mixed colour and weak hypercharge anomaly coefficients vanish.
These cancellations check the consistency of the specified Weyl charge spectrum. They retain a different scope from constructing the interacting physical fields and their common source.
An explicit lattice certificate checks the roots, their norms, an integral basis and determinant one. That is stronger than observing that several dimensions add up. The carrier calculation separately gives a charge spectrum whose gauge anomalies cancel in its stated Weyl interpretation.
These results retain distinct roles. The glue theorem is a lattice statement. Charge assignments and anomaly cancellation are representation and consistency statements. A full physical realization also needs the actual fields, interactions, chiral spectrum and continuum behavior from the same physical source. The current source research tracks those connections separately.
Reproduce the calculation
TFPT constructs the E₈ lattice by joining a D₅ carrier lattice and an A₃ family lattice through their matching ℤ₄ discriminant data. Standard Model representations and charges are read from the marked 3+2 carrier and its even exterior representation. The lattice closure is exact under its premises; E₈ itself is not asserted to be the unbroken physical gauge group.
The v1 module constructs all 240 roots, checks their squared norms, and certifies an even integral basis with determinant one. The v310 module checks the actual carrier charge list and its anomaly coefficients. These tests have different targets and do not certify a complete physical theory.

Related questions
Does TFPT claim E₈ is the Standard Model gauge group?
E₈ is the internal lattice closure of the specified carrier and family construction. The subgroup preserving the marked 3+2 carrier supplies the Standard Model gauge structure in that construction. E₈ is not identified as the unbroken physical gauge group.
Do E₈'s eight dimensions mean eight spacetime dimensions?
They are eight lattice directions. Internal lattice rank, field components and physical spacetime dimensions refer to different spaces; moving between them requires an explicit physical map.
Does anomaly cancellation finish the physical derivation?
It checks consistency of the stated Weyl charge spectrum. The interacting physical source, chiral realization and continuum behavior require their own constructions and premises.
